Garner going great guns

The name Jordie Garner is familiar to most golfers on the Central Coast. Although still only 17 Jordie seems to have been a fixture in District teams for aeons although over the past couple of years his duties with his Sydney club and the State squads has impacted on his availability for our teams.

A short while ago Jordie won selection and travelled to Mission Hills in China to take part in a tournament, part of the Nick Faldo international Juniors programme, and met the great man himself. Jordie told the writer that the things that Mr. Faldo was able to do made him realise that to reach the top he had an enormous amount of work in front of him. Work is not something that frightens Jordie and he will undoubtedly give it his best shot.

More recently Jordie travelled to South Australia as part of the NSW Schools team to play in the Australian Schools Championship.

Jordie secured second place, and a silver medal, in the stroke play event and a gold medal as part of the winning team. Perhaps just a precursor of medals to come in Tokyo in 2010.

Moving into the Match Play section of the tournament played immediately after the stroke event, Jordie faced the daunting task of playing 36 holes each day and won every match. Jordie was the only player in the tournament to do so.

As a result of his fine play in South Australia Jordie has been named Captain of the Australian Schools team and will lead the team internationally later in the year. To be named Captain of the team is a great and well deserved honour for Jordie and I am sure that he will carry the best wishes of all golfers on the Coast when he leads his team into battle.

Congratulations Jordie and best wishes for what is sure to be a great career.
