Hunter River retain Artie Mollett Shield

Eighteen of the Coasts finest travelled to Scone Golf Club over the weekend of 26 / 27 April 2014 for the annual clash with Hunter River DGA for the coveted Artie Mollett Shield.

Saturday afternoon saw a Master player paired with a Colt and an Open player paired with a Junior for 9 matches of 4BBB Scratch Match Play.

CCDGA flew to an early lead with 3 of the first 4 matches in the bag before HRDGA staged a strong fightback to win a further 3 matches resulting in CCDGA moving forward to Sunday with a slender 1 match lead.

The Coasts Dave Willett and Branden Biddle were 3 under through 14 holes but their opposition were too strong and closed out the match after 14 holes to take that match 5 and 4. Nathan Waters, a long time Hunter River representative played unbelievable golf to be 8 under par for the 14 holes he played.

With the singles to be played on Sunday and Nathan obviously in fine form CCDGA called on an old friend, Senor Tequila, in an effort to overcome Nathan and although he was last seen on Saturday evening imitating Spider Man he again played brilliantly on Sunday returning a further 3 under for 14 holes in defeating Damien Chambers 5 and 4.  11 under for 28 holes is great golf in any tournament!

Notwithstanding Nathans efforts CCDGA again jumped to an early lead and with 4 matches still on the course only needed 1 further win to clinch the Shield. Sadly it was not to be and HRDGA again came home with a wet sail and took 3 of the final 4 matches with the other finishing square. The overall result ended 13.5 matches each and as HRDGA held the Shield they retain the Shield for a further 12 months.
