CCDGA vs Hunrer River DGA

Hunter River DGA cordially invited us to meet them at Scone Golf Club for our annual clash over the weekend of 1/2 July.

Since we last ventured to Scone, the golf club has had a major reconstruction due to the town bypass cutting right through what was a great 9 hole course and the Club had to go through 2 years of disruption before the new holes were completed and opened for play.

Pleasing to say that the new holes are really very good and the course hasn't lost anything of its challenge through the reconstruction. There are a couple of shortish (for the big hitters) dogleg par 4 holes which some of the boys drove over the weekend but tree plantings on the corners, once matured, will probably take away that option. Given some years of growth the current holes will be every bit as challenging as the old holes and the course will rightly be regarded as a gem of the Hunter.

Saturday afternoon was a little blustery and the usual 4 Ball matches were played and at the end of the day the results couldn't have been much closer with CCDGA holding a small margin of  half a match having won 3 1/2 to Hunters 2 1/2.

Sunday morning was fresh (the weatherzone report was a temperature at 8.00am of .6 of a degree but -2 allowing for the chill factor) but as the morning progressed the day felt a lot warmer and by the close of play quite a few of the players were down to shirt sleeves (the writer was still covered from head to toe by a beanie, hoodie, 2 jumpers, shirt and gloves).

The  matches were played in great spirit and, as against Newcastle, our juniors won the day 4 matches to nil. The seniors didn't fare so well and only captured 2 1/2 of the 8 matches and one of those was by junior, Alex Hughes, who was promoted to the senior side for this contest.

So close was the result that a win and a half on the 18 hole by the last players on the course saw CCDGA claim the Artie Mollett Shield 9 1/2 matches to 8 1/2 matches.

CCDGA extends to our friends from the Hunter our appreciation for inviting us and to our team congratulations on a fine win and for the manner in which they conducted themselves over the weekend.
