CCDGA vs NDGA

The first of the 2023 Inter District series was played at Shelly Beach over the weekend of 3 & 4 June. Saturday was warm and sunny, almost like a warm spring day, but Sunday turned the weather around and with an early start the boys had to deal with cold winds and the threat of rain. Luckily the rain, apart from one short sharp shower, stayed away and all matches were able to be completed.

On Saturday we played 4BBB Match Play teaming a junior with an open player and at the end of the day Newcastle had won 2 matches, CCDGA 1 match and 3 were squared. Day 1 honours claimed by Newcastle 3.5 to 2.5. Some great golf was played with balls hitting the stick, chip ins and on the 18th hole Newcastle junior, Lachlan Lawson, holed out from around 75 metres to win the hole and square the match.

Sunday reverted to Singles Match Play and in a repeat of the contest in 2022 our Juniors won 6 matches to nil. Great effort team!

Aggregate score at this stage CCDGA 8.5 matches to 3.5. Needing at least 9 matches overall to retain the Artie Mollett Shield ( a tied event sees the trophy retained by last years winner) it was up to the open players to find at least another .5. Should be easy one would think but against a class Newcastle team anything could have happened. As it was to be though the open age players captured 3 matches and squared another to claim their section 3.5 matches to 2.5 for a grand total over the two days of CCDGA 12 matches to Newcastle 6.

Some new faces appeared in both the Junior team and the Open team and they stood up and were counted when it was needed. Again the match up of the 2 Districts was played in good spirits and our team can be proud not only of the result but of the way in which the matches were played.
